12 SANDF officials arrested for weapons theft denied bail

19 automatic rifles (R4s) were stolen from a military base in Pretoria.

Twelve men arrested in connection with the disappearance of 19 R4 assault rifles from a military base near Pretoria will spend New Year in jail after they were denied bail by a military court on Friday night.

After hearing arguments for more than four hours, military Judge EM Coetzer ruled that the 12, who all work at the Lyttelton Tek Base’s Engineering Formation HQ Unit from which the weapons disappeared, must remain in custody for the next seven days to allow the investigating officer time to continue her investigation. Judge Coetzer said this was to “curb them from communicating with each other and with witnesses”, and in this way possibly influencing the case.
